About My Practice
About Me
I have a doctorate in psychology from The Johns Hopkins University, where my original training was in brain research. I've written a book on what goes into really good psychotherapy, entitled The Other Side of the Couch: The Healing Bond in PSychiatry, Faber and Faber, 1995. It is based on interviews with psychiatrists who were named by other psychiatrists in NYC as the ones to whom they sent their own friends and family for therapy.
For about ten years in the 1990's, I ran a program (PPOH) for mentally ill homeless persons in New York City. From 1999-2002, I worked as the Programs Supervisor for all mental health programs of the Ulster County Mental Health Department. I have been in full-time private practice since 2002.
My initial training as a therapist was in traditional psychodynamic psychotherapy. In the last six years, I have received specialty training in schema therapy from the Schema Therapy Center of NYC, under its founder, Jeffrey Young, Ph.D., and am a certified Schema Therapist. I also have Level II training in EMDR. Since 1996, I have been an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Mt. Sinai Medical Center.
Finally, I am a certified teacher of Jewish Meditation Practice, and incorporate meditation practice and nondenominational spritual direction into my practice whenever clients want to add these approaches to our work together.
